From Springfield to Istanbul While its history stretches back to 1915, Chicago's Altheimer & Gray has known considerable growth in recent decades. Since 1980, the firm has grown from 55 lawyers to more than 270. Altheimer's international expansion has also been considerable, particularly in Eastern and Central Europe. No shortage of Chicago connection Like other high-powered Chicago firms, Altheimer can draw on a wealth of political connections, starting at the top. Co-chairman Gery Chico, for example, won considerable attention for his work as president of the Chicago Board of Education. London expansion As suggested above, Altheimer has vigorously developed its international presence. The firm has actively recruited UK-qualified lawyers for its London office, which focuses on property, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, and advising the firm's existing Eastern European-based clients. In August 1999, Altheimer lured in a heavy-hitter when it recruited Jonathan Baird from UK giant Freshfield's investment funds group. Eversheds and Watson Farley & Williams are other UK firms from which the firm has drawn talent.
