Since its 1906 founding in Chicago, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal has evolved into an international law firm with more than 500 lawyers in seven offices. The firm breaks down its practice into three broad groups (Litigation & Business Regulation, Corporate & Securities, and Real Estate), which in turn subdivide into more than 20 subgroups.
A particular area of expertise for the firm is the contentious (and bread and butter) work of representing insurance companies. Clients include Allstate Insurance Company, American International Group, The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S., Fireman's Fund Insurance Co., New York Life Insurance Co., The Prudential Insurance Company of America, and Travelers Insurance Companies. In 1998, for example, the state of Colorado tapped the firm to handle an investigation of whether Colorado's Insurance Division adequately followed up on consumer complaints and penalized companies for illegal practices.
