The Scoop

History

Founded in 1984 by Stephen Clearman, GeoCapital Partners focuses its investments on information technology companies. With $500 million under management across North America and Europe, GeoCapital operates through a Fort Lee, New Jersey office and through GeoCapital Europe, founded in 1998 in London. Capital is managed through five limited partnerships: GeoCapital Ventures, GeoCapital II, GeoCapital III, GeoCapital IV and GeoCapital V. GeoCapital V, the most recently formed fund, is also the largest with $225 million in capital.

Strategic relationships

The relationship between GeoCapital and Broadview is structured as a private equity joint venture, whereby Broadview serves as an expert general partner that provides help with deal flow, industry information and exit strategies. GeoCapital Europe has a similarly structured relationship with Regent Associates, a U.K.-based technology M&A advisor.

Within the broad category of information technology, GeoCapital takes minority stakes primarily in software and transaction processing companies. Geocapital normally invests in companies with revenue of $2 to $40 million. A typical initial investment by GeoCapital ranges from $5 to $20 million.
