History Founded in 1984 by Stephen Clearman, GeoCapital Partners focuses its investments on information technology companies. With $500 million under management across North America and Europe, GeoCapital operates through a Fort Lee, New Jersey office and through GeoCapital Europe, founded in 1998 in London. Capital is managed through five limited partnerships: GeoCapital Ventures, GeoCapital II, GeoCapital III, GeoCapital IV and GeoCapital V. GeoCapital V, the most recently formed fund, is also the largest with $225 million in capital. Strategic relationships GeoCapital maintains an affiliation with Broadview International, an investment bank that specializes in M&A for the Internet technology, communications and media sectors. The relationship between GeoCapital and Broadview is structured as a private equity joint venture, whereby Broadview serves as an expert general partner that provides help with deal flow, industry information and exit strategies. GeoCapital Europe has a similarly structured relationship with Regent Associates, a U.K.-based technology M&A advisor. Investment strategy Within the broad category of information technology, GeoCapital takes minority stakes primarily in software and transaction processing companies. Geocapital normally invests in companies with revenue of $2 to $40 million. A typical initial investment by GeoCapital ranges from $5 to $20 million. Portfolio GeoCapital investments include Blue Sky Software, Big Words, Store Room Solutions and Scribe Technologies. Several companies that GeoCapital has invested in have executed IPOs, including Homestore.com, Autoweb, Expert Software and SeaMED. GeoCapital Europe invests in companies located anywhere in Europe, but usually avoids investments in start-up companies. GeoCapital Europe investments include Armstrong Laing, 4Sight, Job Shop and Omni Ticket Networks. Partners The firm has a total of seven general partners, including Colin Amies and Nic Humphries, who run GeoCapital Europe. Founder Stephen Clearman was formerly a consultant at Bain & Co. and a partner at Adler & Co.
