The Scoop

With hotels and resorts in over 30 countries, Hyatt has built its fortune by accommodating the business travelers, convention-goers, and upscale destination vacationers who account for over half of the hotel chain's business. Owned by Chicago's Pritzker family since it was founded in 1957, Hyatt has recently begun to diversify its business. In addition to its 200 hotel and resort locations, Hyatt has three franchise properties, a vacation ownership resort, an independent golf course, and an interest in a joint casino riverboat venture. Hyatt's strength, however, remains its hotel and resort properties. Recently, the company has poured resources into making the hotels "friendly" to business professionals; many rooms now feature fax machines and Internet connections. In 2000 the hotel chain announced that all of its locations outside the U.S. will offer broadband internet access by May 2001. Attesting to its devotiong to company diversity, ten of its 110 hotels are also run by people of color. Thanks to increasing hotel room rates and an increasing number of travelers, Hyatt is expansiding. The company hopes to add 11 new hotels by the beginning of 2002.

While looking into the possibility of expanding its brick-and-mortar presence, the company has already started work on an internet venture with Marriott Hotels, selling supplies to hotels. The hotel giants said its hotels would purchase about $5 billion in supplies from the site and expect other companies to sign on to the venture, which will be launched later this year.

Getting Hired

Hyatt offers numerous opportunities at hotels and resorts around the world. As the chain expands, so do the job openings. For example, in 1998, Hyatt opened an 800-bed convention center hotel in its hometown of Chicago. It also plans to open a 300-room resort on an Indian reservation in New Mexico and a 500-room resort outside Las Vegas--its first in that city. In spite of economic turmoil, the company continues to expand in Asia; and in January 1999, it announced the opening of a multi-million dollar mixed-use development in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Specific opportunites for both recent college graduates and experienced candidates can be found on Hyatt's web site at http://www.hyatt.com/athyatt/career/index.html. The site also lists internships and offers a description of the management training program.

Our Survey Says

Early responsibility

Hyatt strives to project a sense of class, and Hyatt insiders say that image encompasses employees too. "My experiences with Hyatt helped me move along with my career goals," says one insider. "The people within the organization were great to work with." One of the most consistantly praised features of Hyatt life is the responsibility available to young managers: "Most Hyatts are really into empowering the employees to make decisions that in the past were up to the manager of the department." Says another: "Hyatt is definately a company that likes to promote from within. If you work hard and are dedicated, you can move up very quickly."

Low pay to begin, more comes quickly

One complaint about Hyatt is the low pay, even though this is an industry-wide problem. "The pay did not follow the demands placed upon me," said one insider, although another adds that "pay can skyrocket as you are promoted."

Don't expect a social life

Insiders also report an unsuprising fact: taking care of hotel guests is a 24-7 task. "I love the excitement of new surroundings, but the hotel industry is very demanding on its operations managers," says one insider. "Long hours, low pay, few rewards and recognition, all the stress you can handle, and irregular schedules." Reveals another: "I hope you do not want a social life. I have difficulty balancing my family with work demands, working 60-plus hours per week, some weeks six days a week."

Career rewards - and free rooms too

There's a reason young employees are putting in the hours, however. Hard work is linked to rewards. "The company is very good about transferring motivated employees to other hotels and areas," says one insider. "Pay may not be as high as you would like to start, but this industry provides opportunities for rapid advancement if you are motivated and capable." And then there are the perks: nearly two weeks free at many Hyatt hotels. "You get 12 free room nights a year on some exceptional properties."
