The Scoop

Tire mania

Cooper Tire & Rubber produces more than 40 million tires each year. Founded in 1914, Cooper makes not only tires, but also rubber hoses, automotive sealing systems, and vibration control products as well. The company supplies tires to major car manufacturers such as General Motors, Ford, and DaimlerChrylser. It also markets its products to an independent dealer network with more than 1,300 members, and sells to a private label clientele that includes Sears, Pep Boys, and Winston tires. The company has boosted its production in recent years by exploiting the latest computer technology while simultaneously implementing a waste-minimization program that has cut the waste from its older plants in half. Cooper has also used its capital to invest in two new major manufacturing facilities which have roughly doubled the company's tire production capabilities.

Strategic agreements

Cooper Tire & Rubber announced an alliance with Pirelli Tire North America in 1999 to increase competitiveness in North and South America. Under the agreement, Cooper will distribute Pirelli tires in North America. The companies are considering the possiblity of merging their distribution networks in the future as well due to declining product sales. Cooper also announced an agreement with MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation in 1999 to create advanced tire and automotive rubber product designs. Cooper Tire & Rubber will use MacNeal-Schwendler's advanced technology to shorten the product design cycle, increasing product quality and lowering costs of production. Cooper's goal is to provide its customers with cutting-edge tire technology.

Our Survey Says

Long known as a family-friendly company, Cooper offers constant challenges and opportunities to its employees. The "small-company culture" stresses a "solid work ethic and a social atmosphere." Cooper insiders say that the emphasis on career development includes "exposure to upper management" and "a chance for even recent hires to play large roles in important projects." However, employees also comment that Cooper is struggling with a "corporate identity crisis" as it confronts a "slipping market share."
