 | | | | | Childhood: Medulloblastoma More info on this condition | |
| | | Introduction | | | | | This is a form of brain tumor found only in children and young adults. Medulloblastomas comprise 10 to 20 percent of central nervous system tumors in children. Medulloblastoma is an infratentorial tumor, meaning it is located within the lower part of the brain. The disease can spread to other parts of the body, including the spine.
These tumors may develop from primitive stem cells of the cerebellum that normally become either neurons (messenger) or glial (support) cells.
Medulloblastomas grow quickly. About half of all cases can be cured with radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy. The only known risk factor is female sex; the disease occurs more frequently in boys than in girls.
