Stages I and II: The doctor may use systemic and intrathecal chemotherapy.
Stages III and IV: Systemic and intrathecal chemotherapy will be used. Radiation therapy is sometimes given if the chest contains a large growth.
Recurrent: Treatment will depend on where the cancer comes back and the type of treatment given previously. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation together with systemic chemotherapy, possibly with different drugs than those used before, or a clinical trial are options.
SNCL (including Burkitt's and non-Burkitt's)
Stages I and II: Treatment may include systemic chemotherapy and possibly intrathecal chemotherapy.
Stages III and IV: Treatment will probably be systemic chemotherapy plus intrathecal chemotherapy. A clinical trial testing new drug combinations and doses may be an option.
Recurrent: Treatment will depend on where the cancer comes back and the type of treatment given previously. Options may include systemic chemotherapy with or without intrathecal chemotherapy, allogeneic or autologous bone marrow transplantation or a clinical trial of a new treatment.
LCL
Stages I and II: Treatment may include systemic chemotherapy with or without intrathecal chemotherapy.
Stages III and IV: Treatment may include systemic chemotherapy with or without intrathecal chemotherapy. Clinical trials are testing new combinations of drugs.
Recurrent: Treatment will depend on where the cancer comes back, the type of treatment that was given before, and the child's overall condition. Options may include systemic chemotherapy with or without intrathecal chemotherapy, allogeneic or autologous bone marrow transplantation, or a clinical trial of a new treatment.
