Many patients have a pupil that appears white or red (as in a photograph when someone has looked directly into the flash when a picture was taken) instead of the normal black. This condition is called leukocoria. The abnormal white pupil is sometimes called a cat's-eye reflex. (Leukocoria does not always signal retinoblastoma, however.)
A crossed eye is another symptom of the disease. The child's eye may turn out toward the ear or in toward the nose.
Other symptoms include poor vision, a red, painful eye, inflammation of tissue surrounding the eye, an enlarged pupil and different-colored irises. Children with extra fingers or toes, malformed ears or retardation may be more likely to develop the disease than other children.
