 Risk Factors
Most cases of myelodysplastic syndrome are called idiopathic or primary MDS because they have no obvious cause. However, some patients may develop the disease following treatment with radiation or chemotherapy for another disease. This is referred to as secondary myelodysplastic syndrome. A small minority of cases is associated with a familial risk.
