| | | Treatment by Stage | | | | | Stage 0/carcinoma in situ treatment may include one of the following:
- Local removal of the cancer
- Wedge or bowel resection
- Electrofulguration
- Radiation
Stage I treatment may include one of the following:
- Wedge or bowel resection
- Local removal of the tumor with or without radiation plus chemotherapy
- Internal radiation therapy
- Electrofulguration
Stage II treatment may include one of the following:
- Surgery (wedge or bowel resection) followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy
- Surgery to remove the tumor, as well as the colon, rectum, bladder or prostate, depending on where the cancer has spread, followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy followed by surgery and chemotherapy.
- Surgery followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy
Stage III treatment may include one of the following:
- Surgery followed by radiation and chemotherapy
- Surgery to remove the tumor and colon, rectum, bladder or prostate, depending on where the cancer has spread, followed by radiation and chemotherapy
- Radiation with or without chemotherapy, followed by surgery and chemotherapy
- Surgery followed by radiation or chemotherapy
Stage IV treatment may include one of the following:
- Surgery
- Radiation and chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor
Treatment for recurrent rectal cancer may include:
- Surgery
- Radiation therapy and chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor
