A two- to three-fold increase in risk of small intestine cancer has been associated with the intake of red meat and salt-cured food. Drinking alcohol and smoking have not been linked to the disease.
People who develop adenocarcinoma in their large intestine are more likely to develop the tumors in their small intestine. Increased incidence with Crohn's disease has been noted.
