 | | | | | Soft Tissue & Bone Cancer: Rhabdomyosarcoma More info on this condition | |
| | | Treatment | | | | | Treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma involves surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Doctors attempt to remove the tumor along with surrounding healthy tissue to ensure complete removal of the cancer. Chemotherapy is usually given before or after surgery, and radiation is used to kill cancer cells that may remain.
A combination of chemotherapy drugs that includes at least vincristine, actinomycin D and cyclophosphamide (VAC) is usually given. Current studies are comparing the addition or substitution of other drugs to VAC for patients with advanced disease.
Chemotherapy is necessary for the following cases: in addition to surgery for Stage I; with radiation therapy for Stage II; and to shrink the tumor before or after surgery for stage III and IV and continued as adjunctive therapy for up to a year.
