The next time you're in an accident or your radiator springs a leak and you need to replace some car parts, be a smart shopper. Purchasing a used or reconditioned part, or even a new part not made specifically by your car manufacturer, can save you more than 50 percent of the total cost.
Contact a salvage company, automobile recycler, or used parts dealer to compare prices. This doesn't apply to all parts, though, so ask your mechanic first. Some used parts, such as brake pads, don't cost enough new to yield any savings, while others could be damaged from sitting outside for years.
