How do I check the coolant in my car? |

Engine coolants are important in car maintenance because they keep the engine cool, and engines heat up in any type of weather. To make sure your engine never overheats, check the coolant level in your radiator about every 3,000 miles.
1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine. Make sure the engine is cool before you open the hood or check anything. Note that it is dangerous to touch or remove a hot radiator cap--it can cause severe burns.
2. Open the hood and locate the coolant reservoir, which is a plastic tank located near the radiator. The radiator and the coolant reservoir are usually located at the front of the car. If you can't find the reservoir, consult the owner's manual.
3. Simply check the outside of the reservoir to verify the coolant level inside. The outside of the reservoir is marked to measure the coolant, and the reservoir is clear enough to see the coolant level.
4. If the level is low, open the cap on the coolant reservoir and add coolant. You can use a funnel if you like. Some coolants require water before you add them, so check the label on the coolant before pouring it in.
