What's the best way to store leftover wine? |
If you don't finish your wine in one sitting, here are some tips for saving what's left. - White wine will generally keep in the refrigerator for four to five days once it's been opened. Red wine will usually last no more than two days at room temperature.
- The less air that gets to it, the better, so reuse the cork to stopper the bottle, or transfer your wine to a smaller container and cork it tightly to help preserve it longer.
- You can also purchase products to assist in keeping the wine fresh. One such product is a vacuum pump that expels most of the air from a bottle. Another product is inert gas that is sprayed into a bottle of wine before it's recorked. Since the gas is more dense than air, it settles on the surface of the wine and provides a barrier between the wine and air. These gases can be expensive, though.
