How do I know when my home-grown cantaloupe is ripe? |
When they ripen they will change color, lighten up a bit, and when they are fully ripe, they will virtually fall off the vine. If bugs are eating the fruit, that's a good sign--it shows it is not riddled with chemicals. Simply cut off that side and eat the rest.
To prevent bugs from getting at your melons in the future, place several sheets of newspaper under each melon, or dry straw several inches thick. Just be careful not to break the stem off! This should help with the bugs, since they usually hop onto the fruit from the moist bottom side.

Check the area where the fruit had been attached to the stem. If it's smooth, the melon is ripe and ready to be picked.
