My child is allergic to peanuts. How can I make sure she doesn't accidentally eat them? |
|
 |
1. When eating at a restaurant, be sure to verify with the server that your child's order doesn't contain peanuts in any form. Thai food, Chinese food, and other Asian cooking often incorporates peanuts, peanut butter or peanut oil into meals. In addition, some restaurants use peanut butter as a thickener in chili and other foods. Be absolutely clear about what's in your child's food whenever you dine out.
2. Watch out for packaged foods labeled with a warning that they may contain nuts. Some foods may not have nuts as an ingredient, but if they are processed on equipment used for a number of products, there may be nuts in the final product. So while your favorite chocolate ice cream doesn't list nuts as an ingredient, if it's made using the same equipment that makes the vanilla-peanut butter swirl ice cream, it will have "may contain nuts" on it's label.
3. Remind your child frequently that it's not okay to accept food from a friend or a friend's parents unless you've checked them first.
4. Alert your child's teachers, the school nurse and anyone who supervises your child of his or her peanut allergy.
5. Have your child carry an oral antihistamine to take in case of an emergency and to reduce the symptoms of shock until he or she arrives at a hospital. If your child is very young, consider having him or her wear a medical I.D. bracelet.
6. Speak to your child's doctor about keeping an injectable dose of epinephrine on hand (both at home and at the school nurse's office). Find out when and how to use if it becomes necessary.
