How do I check my bags at the curbside of a United States airport?
Checking your bags at the curb might save you from carrying your luggage so far, but there are a few points to keep in mind.
1. Before you check your bags, confirm that your flight hasn't been canceled or delayed for a few hours.
2. Never leave your bags unattended--not just because they could be stolen in the blink of an eye, but also because it's a security risk. (A stranger could pack explosives or other illegal items into your unattended bag.) Along the same lines, don't leave your car unattended in an airport loading zone because security might very well have it towed.
3. Always keep your passport, driver's license, or other identification on you. You'll probably need to show it when you check your bags, possibly when you get your boarding pass, and of course at customs checkpoints.
4. Checked baggage can get lost or be detoured all too easily, so make sure you remove any old destination tags, clearly mark your name, address, country, and phone number on each bag, and watch to make sure your bags are marked with the right flight number to go to the right city. Tip the person who takes your bags a dollar or two per bag (depending on how much money you have to throw around).
5. You don't have to check your bags at the curb, but if you don't, you'll need to check them at the lobby check-in counter. It's usually not far from the curb, but the lines there may be even longer than they are outside.
