Do I really need the car insurance sold by rental car agencies?
There is a difference between car insurance sold by rental car agencies and rental car reimbursement insurance sold by insurance companies. Rental car reimbursement insurance provides you with a rental car at little or no cost while your car is in the repair shop after an accident--even if the accident is your fault. Because it's so inexpensive, only $1 to $2 (U.S.) per month, this supplemental coverage is seldom, if ever, promoted by the insurance companies. Yet the savings to a person who is without a car an average of 10 to 12 days can be substantial.

Before you rent a car, check with your own car insurance carrier (and with your credit card company) to find out whether you're already covered for a rental car. Find out how much coverage you have, and then decide if you need to add to it or not by purchasing rental insurance.
