Provide Effective Employee Reviews
(6 steps)
|
|
The carrot or the stick?
Whether they're slackers or superstars, all employees need to know how they're performing on the job. The problem is, the traditional employee review process can end up bruising egos and inciting dissension in the ranks.
If handled properly, though, reviews can actually help build morale and increase productivity. We'll show you how to make annual performance reviews benefit employees and beef up your bottom line.
Before you begin
Every business, no matter how small, must assess the performance of its employees. If workers are performing below acceptable levels, it's essential to let them know. And high-performing employees need feedback too, even if it's just a pat on the back.
The problem is, if done wrong, reviews can corrode the trust between managers and employees, make employees feel powerless, and undermine team spirit. Yet if handled correctly, annual reviews can prove extremely valuable. They can actually build trust and improve communication and teamwork.
Each employer must decide for him- or herself whether formal evaluations are the way to go. Just make sure you're not avoiding the issue because you're afraid to sit down with employees and say what you really think
