Choose a Private School for Your Child
(5 steps)
|
|
Make an educated choice

There are many reasons parents send children to private schools, including greater academic challenges, special studies in the arts or athletics, an environment that supports greater self-esteem, or specific religious educations, to name a few. But how do parents find the right school for their child--and the family's resources? With a little research, it's almost as easy as ABC.
Before you begin
Choosing a school is a complicated process, one that shouldn't be rushed. In fact, you should do your search during the year before your child attends. You'll need plenty of time to apply for admission and financial aid--many schools make admissions decisions for the upcoming academic year as early as the previous March.
Involving your child in the process as much as possible is also a good idea; listen to his or her fears or concerns about any schools you're considering. No matter how hard you work at getting your child into a private school, success is more likely if he or she takes part in the decision to attend. If you're enrolling a small child into school for the first time, a simple discussion regarding what the school will be like should suffice.
As you begin the search for private schools, consider the standardized tests that many schools require. Two tests that schools often use are the Second School Test Board's Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) and the Educational Records Bureau's Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Contact the schools you intend to apply to, and ask them which tests they require and how to contact the proper testing agencies. You can also find information on the SSAT and ISEE on the Internet.
