Learn2 Choose a Private School for Your Child (continued)
Step 3: Visit schools

Visiting a school with your child will tell you more about the institution than anything else can. By visiting, you'll see how students and faculty interact--both inside and outside the classroom. You can meet the staff and ask about their educational philosophy. Beyond the well-kept buildings and campus grounds, you'll be able to see how large classes are, how up-to-date the equipment is, and how frequently the students have access to it. You'll see how interested and enthusiastic the students are. If it's a boarding school, you'll get an idea of housekeeping standards, room and dorm sizes, and what the food tastes like.

Expect your visit to take several hours, if not a whole day. If you want access to classes and facilities, call ahead to make an appointment. At this point, the admissions office may want to interview your child about his or her interests and goals, so come prepared for the information gathering to go both ways.

Remember to take your list of needs and goals with you on your visit, and during or soon after the visit, write down your impressions of how well the school met your criteria. Otherwise, it's too easy to confuse the qualities of various schools.
