Choose a Private School for Your Child
(continued)

|
Step 4:
Choose and apply to several schools
While discussing the schools with your child, create a short list of several schools, all of which you approve and would be willing to send your child to. Then let your child make the final decision. If your child is fairly young and expresses such fears as "I'm afraid they won't like me there" as a reason for not considering a school, get him or her to talk about the fear. You'll probably be able to help your child see beyond concerns that you know will be transitory.
Applying to several schools will bolster your child's chances of being accepted at one of them. However, the application process can be intimidating if you don't know what to expect. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the following items are typically required:
A completed application form
The most recent academic transcript with grades
Past standardized testing results
Teacher recommendations (if your child is transferring from another school)
Results of a standardized admission test and/or a school-adminstered entrance exam
A formal interview with your child Depending on the student's age, some schools may also ask for the following:
Parent statements
Student writing samples
Student artwork/portfolios
Specialized testing Most applications will come with deadlines. Be sure to meet these, so your child will be considered.
More and more families are choosing private schools as an alternative to public education. And due to the variety of financial aid available (see Step 5), the opportunity to attend a private school is available to more and more children. By researching carefully, you'll be able to choose the right school for your child.
