Learn2 Cope with a Crying Child (continued)
Step 4: Accommodate

You need not drop what you're doing and lose your composure every time the baby cries: a few minutes of crying is not going to harm the child. But here are some ways to attend to the crying when you are trying to understand the cause:
  • Communicate: Entertain the baby by speaking to it and narrating your activities.
  • Cuddle the baby: Hold the baby close to your chest to give the baby a sense of security.
  • Sing, sing a song: If your baby enjoys your singing, or perhaps just one song, hurrah! Sing it again. Even your humming or the humming of a fan may relax the child.
  • Give the baby a massage: Most babies enjoy being caressed, either on the back, arms or legs
  • Give the baby a bath: Some babies enjoy a warm (not hot!) bath.
