Plan a Family Reunion
(continued)

Step 3:
Pick a date
Once you've decided on a type of reunion, you can choose when to hold it and how long it should last.
When? Try to choose a date that most people will be able to make. Summer, when kids are out of school, is a popular choice. So are long holiday weekends (though travel and other logistics can get a little tricky at those times). Many reunions are centered around a significant family date: Great-Grandpa's 90th birthday, or the anniversary of a marriage or an emigration.
How long? Generally, reunions last one to three days. The larger a reunion, or the farther people have traveled, the longer it tends to be. Beware of making it last too long, however, since you'll want to keep the magic alive, not run out of pleasant things to do and say.
Give advance notice. If many relatives will have to travel to get to the reunion site, or if the plan is elaborate or expensive, give folks up to a year to budget time and money.
