Research Your Family Tree

Step 3:
Join a genealogical society
Now that an older relative has told you that your great-grandmother was born in Latvia, for instance, you may want to research information about previous generations in that country. But what if you live in France or the United States or Mexico? How do you trace your family back into Latvia? One way is to network. That is, to find a group of people with similar research interests and questions.
Consider joining a national or local genealogical society. Some of these societies specialize in a specific region of the world, nationality, or ethnicity. This can be a good place to meet other researchers with common interests and to develop leads.
Since each country has its own record-keeping institutions and rules for accessing that information, a genealogical society committed to that country might be able to offer solid research advice specific to your needs. It may also lend assistance with language barriers. Some have their own libraries, support groups, and bulletin boards.
If you type "genealogical society" into most Internet search engines, you'll discover information on societies to join. Your local library may have directories that list these societies, and you can also consult your local telephone book.
