Research Your Family Tree

Step 4:
Conduct background research
Taking some time to learn about the political and social situation of the region or country that your ancestors came from might assist you in your research. For example, if the country is currently under a totalitarian regime, it may be impossible to access records.
A genealogical society or library dedicated to that part of the world may be able to advise you on how to handle that roadblock. The more you learn about your ancestors' country of origin, the more focused you'll be when developing a research plan.
It may also help to familiarize yourself with the history and geography of that country. For example, if the country's name or borders have changed over time, it could influence your research. Perhaps a sudden economic boom or depression caused a pattern of migration. This kind of background research may help you eventually find the names of the regions your relatives might have moved to and from.
You certainly don't have to become an expert, but the more detective work you do about the places your ancestors lived, the greater your chances become of navigating your way back through the generations.
