Make a Family Time Capsule
(continued)
|
|
Step 1:
Do your research
What can you do to help guarantee the capsule makes it safely into the hands of your descendants? For starters, you need to resolve certain basic issues: What type of capsule to use, where to get it, what items to put in it, and where to store it so it can be found in the future. Being knowledgeable of all your options will help you make the most informed decisions. Here are some places that can help:
Time capsule societies. These may answer your questions, offer advice, and provide informative literature. You can register your time capsule with some societies for free, so a record is kept of the endeavor. Societies can be found by typing, "time capsule" or "time capsule society" into an Internet search engine, or by asking the reference librarian at your local library.
Conservation and preservation libraries, museums, and societies. These may help you determine what items will withstand the test of time, and the best ways to preserve things like photographs, newspapers, clothing, electronic equipment, and so forth. Your local library is a good place to start when trying to find a place that specializes in this area. Also, there are several books that offer instruction for making a time capsule.
Retailers. Many companies sell actual time capsules. They also sell protective envelopes to preserve photographs, storage bags for clothing, storage boxes for jewelry and electronic equipment, and archival quality paper. You can find these retailers on the Internet, in the yellow pages under "time capsule" or "preservation," or through library research. Before you buy anything, however, check its durability and reputation with a time capsule society or preservation library. It's also a good idea to spend some time looking into what different retailers offer, so you know your options before you spend any money.
