Make a Family Time Capsule
(continued)

|
Step 3:
Obtain a capsule
You can make your own time capsule with a large jar, a few food storage bags, and some extra strength glue. Simply clean out the jar, preserve your items in the bags, and use the glue to seal the lid onto the jar to prevent air and water from getting in. Obviously, if you want to preserve your capsule for 1,000 years, or preserve electronic equipment, this is not the most durable alternative. But it's relatively inexpensive and easy, and will probably preserve photographs, newspaper clippings, and certain memorabilia at least until your newborn is old enough to make his or her own time capsule.
Other containers, such as a safe, a cedar chest, or a safe deposit box can also work as time capsules.
If you purchase a time capsule or preservation supplies from retailers, the price can range from inexpensive (less than $20 U.S.) to high ($25,000 U.S. or more). Time capsules range from stainless steel, sealed containers to burial vaults to polypropylene containers. Make sure the container is a strong, waterproof enclosure that can be sealed tightly to keep out water and air. It should also be rustproof.
