Step 4: Store Time

Where do you keep your time capsule once it's sealed? Do you bury it, put it in your basement, or place it on the mantel in your living room? Here are a few ideas:

Bury it. Although it may be a fun activity, there are certain things to think about before you bury your capsule. First off, it's estimated that more than 75 percent of all buried time capsules have been lost. To prevent this from happening to you, make sure you accurately mark the spot where the capsule is buried, or draw a map complete with exact measurements of the area. But even if you do all that, there's still a chance that in later generations, the spot where your capsule rests could be built upon or dug up, and your capsule could be lost in the transition.

The biggest threat to a buried capsule, however, is damage due to moisture. Check with a preservation library or time capsule society to determine what type of capsule will best withstand moisture, and the best way to seal it.

Store it in your basement. Make sure the place you store it is warm and dry, and safe from insects and animals.

Place it on your mantel or in a trophy case. It may prove to be an excellent conversation piece to keep the capsule on your mantel, in a trophy case, or on display somewhere else in your home.

Keep it in a safe deposit box. Most banks charge a rental fee depending on the size of the box.

Wherever you choose to store the capsule, it's essential to inform the next generation of its existence and whereabouts, and what to do with it. For example, if you choose to keep it inside a safe in your basement, you should make arrangements for your children to preserve it when you no longer can, and then for your children to pass it down to their children, and so on. Passing it from generation to generation, literally by hand, may prove to be the most reliable means of preserving the time capsule.

By creating a simple time capsule and storing it properly, you can help make the present a little more accessible to the future.
