| Sound off about... Timothy McVeigh |
Should Timothy McVeigh get to determine when he dies?
January 5, 2001
On April 19, 1995, 168 people were killed and 500 more were injured when the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed. In June of 1997, primary suspect Timothy McVeigh was convicted of the bombing and condemned to death for his actions.
Last week, Americans were once again reminded of the terrible tragedy when a federal judge granted McVeigh his request to drop all appeals of his death sentence and get an execution date within the next 120 days.
While Judge Richard Matsch did grant McVeigh his request, he did not set an official execution date and also gave McVeigh until January 11 to change his mind.
How do you feel about Judge Matsch’s decision? Should McVeigh have a say in when he dies? Should ANY inmates on death row have a say in when and/or how they die?
Finally, do you think Timothy McVeigh deserves the death penalty? What punishment do YOU think is right for someone convicted of a bombing that resulted in the deaths of 168 people and the injury of 500 others?
