Accomplishment or scandal? Defining the legacy of Bill Clinton

January 12, 2001

In 1991, then-Arkansas Governor William Jefferson Clinton declared his intentions to run for President of the United States of America. It is safe to say that, for better or for worse, Americans had little idea what implications this decision would have on the nation over the next 9+ years.

As Clinton’s second term finally winds to a close, how would you rate his performance? Do you think he has left a “legacy”? If so, how would you define the Clinton legacy?

Here are some additional issues and questions to consider:

  • Clinton’s time in office was marked by both political accomplishment and personal scandal. Which do you think will play a bigger role in defining Clinton’s legacy? What will he most remembered for?

  • What would you say were Clinton’s biggest accomplishments as president?

  • What would you say were Clinton’s biggest mistakes as president?

  • Where do you think President Clinton ranks in the pantheon of American presidents? Was he one of the best? One of the worst? Somewhere in the middle?

  • Clinton has been in the public life since he became the State Attorney General of Arkansas in 1976. What do you think he will do first as he becomes a private citizen again for the first time in 24 years? Do you think he will be successful?
