Will Roe vs. Wade survive the Bush administration?

January 26, 2001

It didn’t take President Bush long to make waves in Washington. Three days after being inaugurated as the 43rd president of the United States, Bush tackled one of our nation’s most divisive issues by announcing that he would bar federal aid to international family-planning groups that support abortion.

While the decision didn’t pose any direct challenge to the legality of abortion in the United States, it did make clear Bush’s attitudes toward abortion and the groups that support it.

So, with last Monday marking the 28th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, and a new administration in the White House – what do you see as the future for abortion rights in America?

Do you support the Roe vs. Wade decision? How do you feel about last week’s decision by Bush? What are your feelings about the issue of abortion in general?

Here’s your chance to tell fellow iWon users what you think!

  • Are you for or against a woman’s right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy? What factors (religious, moral, health, etc.) have helped contributed to your position?

  • In terms of abortion’s legality, do you feel abortion should be legal under all circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances, or illegal under all circumstances? Why?

  • What is your opinion on the legality of abortions performed within the last 6 months of a pregnancy? Should these “partial birth abortions” be legal or illegal?

  • When do you believe life begins? Does it begin at conception, birth, or sometime in between?

  • What is your opinion on RU-486, the early abortion pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration in September? (The pill, which has been used since 1988, causes an abortion early in pregnancy without surgery.)

  • If you voted in November’s election, how much of a role did the abortion issue play in helping you make your decision on whom to vote for?
