Sound off about... the taxman cometh
Taxes, taxes, taxes!

February 23, 2001

T.S. Eliot wrote in his poem, The Wasteland, that “April is the cruelest month.” While Eliot wasn’t talking about paying taxes in that poem, he very easily could have been – what with all the frustrations involved with filling out forms, gathering earnings statements and doing all that... math.

In the spirit of Eliot's verse, we decided to give you the chance to sound off about something that almost everyone finds to be cruel and unusual punishment: paying taxes!

So, tell us, iWon users -- how do you feel about paying your taxes? Do you think you pay too much? Too little? How do you feel about President Bush’s proposed tax plan? Do you think it will help or hurt the economy?

Here are some additional issues to consider:

  • President Bush is currently petitioning congress to pass his $1.6 trillion tax cut. Who do you think will benefit most from the President’s planned tax cuts?

  • While serving as Governor of Texas, President Bush delivered the two largest tax cuts in the history of the state ($1 billion in 1997 and $2 billion in 1999). Currently, Texas is struggling with budget problems that some lawmakers say are a direct result of Mr. Bush’s tax cuts. Do you believe these lawmakers?

  • How do you feel about the state and local taxes in your area? Are they fair? Are they comparable to neighboring regions?

  • Last year, Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas and Senator Robert Shelby of Alabama crafted a Flat Tax proposal that would have scrapped the current tax code in favor of a flat tax of 17% for all American individuals and business, regardless of total income or background. The only exceptions would have been for families of four, who were to be exempt from paying taxes on the first $35,400 in income. How do you feel about this proposal? Would you vote for such a proposal?

  • How do you feel about the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)? Do they do a good job? Have they been entrusted with too much power?

  • Finally, what would you do if you were put in charge of the federal income tax system? Would you leave it the way it is, make a few changes or completely revamp it? If you believe changes are needed, how would you change it?
