Sound off about... Religion in America's public schools
In the wake of Monday's tragedy in San Diego, we continue our debate: does religion have a place in America's public shools?

March 2, 2001

Monday, a smiling 15-year-old boy opened fire on his classmates at Santana High School in San Diego, California, killing two teenagers and wounding 13 others. It is believed to be the worst act of violence in an American school since the Columbine massacre in April 1999.

What are your initial reactions to this tragedy? Is there more violence in America's public schools these days -- or are these school shootings just isolated incidents? Does the presence of religion in America's public schools, or lack thereof, have anything to do with these tragic episodes -- or are the two topics unrelated?

Here are the questions we originally posed on Friday for our debate on the presence of religion in America's public schools:

The U.S. Supreme Court is currently trying a case that could have major implications on the presence of religion in America’s public schools.

Good News Club v. Milford Central Schools pits a school district in Upstate New York against an evangelical Christian group that believes t has a constitutional right to offer Bible Study and prayer as an after-school activity for young children. The group feels these activities should not be treated any differently than the other after-school activities at the school.

The Court will decide whether public institutions should be able to (or should be required to) open their doors to religious groups as they would to any other group. Also at issue is whether the same rules should apply when the school children involved are young children.

Where do you stand on allowing religious groups access to public schools for after-school activities? Does the age of the student matter to you? Where do you stand in general on the presence of religion in America’s public schools?
