How big is the problem of homelessness in America?

March 9, 2001

It has happened to virtually all of us. While walking along a busy city street – or even a small country road – we’ve witnessed a homeless American sleeping or asking for money or food. In some areas of the country, it's virtually non-existent, but depending on where you live, you just might encounter a scene like the one described above everyday.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, researchers have found that up to 600,000 people in the U.S. experience homelessness every night. The homeless are represented by every race, creed and just about every age range.

In your opinion, is the homeless problem in America a big one? If so, how did it become such a problem? What can we do as a society, if anything, to combat this problem? What should the U.S. government be doing, if anything?

Here are some additional issues to consider and questions to answer:

  • Is there a homeless problem where you live? How do you think it compares with the homeless problem in the rest of the U.S.?

  • What do you think of government-run public assistance programs? Are they a good thing? Can they help this problem? What do you think of the U.S. welfare system?

  • Do you think the homeless problem will get better or worse over the next 10-20 years?
