| Sound off about... President Bush's Budget |
Bush slashes taxes/spending and raises eyebrows on Capitol Hill
April 10, 2001
2,500. That’s how many pages it took President Bush and his administration to detail the $1.96 trillion budget they unveiled on Monday. And 2,500 could easily be the number of complaints filed verbally by the Democratic party, as Bush has attacked existing spending programs with spirited abandon.
The budget, which calls for a $1.6 trillion tax cut, aims to significantly scale back many government-spending programs and fund the needs of Americans, “without the fat.”
The argument over what exactly constitutes “fat” in the existing budget is certainly a contentious one – and one that could very well set the tone for the relationship between President Bush and Congressional Democrats. Bush sees his cuts as necessary to abolish ineffective programs, Democrats see them as a sure-fire way to make it even tougher on the neediest Americans.
The guiding principle behind the Bush budget is found in a quote that appears in the massive document: “The American people have been overcharged for government and they deserve a refund.”
Do you agree with President Bush? Do we pay too much in taxes? What do you think of Bush’s budget? Is he recommending cuts in the right places? If you were in charge of writing the budget, what types of things would you propose?
