Addicted in the Spotlight: Robert Downey Jr.’s endless fall from grace
April 27, 2001
On Tuesday, Robert Downey Jr. made headlines once again when he was arrested for possession of cocaine and Valium. In recent years, Downey has spent much of his time both in-and-out of prison and rehab centers, but last August, in an attempt to get his career back on track, Downey accepted the pivotal role of Larry, a love interest of Ally McBeal, on the hit TV series of the same name.
While Downey has garnered both Golden Globe and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards for his work on the Fox series, he was arrested in November on drug charges, and has once again caused tumult on the “McBeal” set as a result of his most recent run-in with the law. Downey has repeatedly violated his probation, and as a result delayed production of “Ally McBeal,” but he has yet to be fired from the series. If Robert Downey Jr. were not a celebrity, do you think he would have been given so many second chances at his place of work?
Of course, Downey is not in bad company. Celebrities who have made headlines for their addiction include Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Drew Barrymore, Christian Slater, Kiefer Sutherland, Carrie Fisher and Chevy Chase, to name only a few. Such actors as John Belushi, River Phoenix and Chris Farley have paid for their addictions with their lives. Do you think that celebrities are more prone to drug abuse?
