Outwit. Outlast. Outplay. If there is one show on television that lives up to its tagline, its Survivor. Since trampling the ever-popular “Friends” during February sweeps, the series has stayed at the top of the ratings game, thus proving that reality-based television is more compelling than a kiss between Jennifer Aniston and Winona Ryder (and Lisa Kudrow, too!).

Now, as the second installment of the Survivor series is about to draw to a much-anticipated close, let’s take a moment to ponder the appeal of this primetime phenomenon. What makes the show such a ratings leader? Is it the backstabbing alliances that come into play at tribal council? How about the drama of watching a beautiful castaway who is barely surviving on rice lose her hair? Or, do people just get a kick out of hearing the host utter the fateful phrase, “The Tribe has spoken”?
