| Sound off about... Memorial Day 2001 |
A moment of reflection
May 25, 2001
From the beaches of Normandy to the sands of Desert Storm, Americans have put their lives on the line to preserve our freedom. And while it is many times taken for granted, any soldier will tell you: freedom is never free.
A brief history of Memorial Day…
The first recognized observance of Memorial Day occurred in 1865 when Henry C. Welles, a druggist in the village of Waterloo, NY, mentioned at a social gathering that honor should be shown to fallen soldiers of the Civil War by decorating their graves. The town was inspired by the idea and wasted no time in making wreaths, crosses and bouquets for each veteran's grave.
Exactly two years after this first observance, General John A. Logan, first commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, established “Decoration Day,” to be observed on May 30th. Over the years the holiday has come to be known as “Memorial Day,” which is celebrated on the last Monday in May.
Memorial Day 2001…
While it would be impossible for all of us to set a bouquet of flowers down on each and every veterans grave, it is possible to say “Thank You” to our soldiers, both living and dead, by sharing a story or sentiment with other iWon members.
Also, take a moment to consider whether or not you think Americans still honor the true spirit of Memorial Day, just like the villagers of Waterloo, NY, so many years ago. Has Memorial Day turned into just another typical holiday weekend?
