Sound off about... The Abortion Issue
The Morning After

June 5, 2001

“Accidents Happen.” That is what Planned Parenthood is telling American teens in a nation-wide campaign for emergency contraception. In a series of successful public service announcements, top celebrities like Pink and Sarah McLachlan are educating young people about playing it safe after sex.

Before pregnancy reaches the stage where someone would need the abortion pill, Mifepristone (RU-486), Planned Parenthood clinics are letting women know that there are FDA approved drugs like Preven, which is a form of emergency contraception, that can be taken to prevent pregnancy when used within 72 hours (three days) after sexual intercourse.

Since the FDA approved Preven (the “morning after pill”) in 1998, and Planned Parenthood began distributing the drug, the number of women receiving emergency contraception from their clinics grew from roughly 17,000 in 1995 to 113,000 in 1999.

While Preven has been hailed by pro-choice advocates as one of America’s “best kept health care secrets,” anti-abortion groups have complained that more freely available morning-after contraception may encourage younger people to have unprotected sex, and increase instances where girls are pressured into having sex by their boyfriends.

Where do you stand on the issue of abortion? Do you view the “morning after pill” as a form of abortion? Do you think increased availability of drugs like Preven will increase teen and pre-teen sex?
