Planet of the Apes
July 27, 2001
Where do we come from? It seems as if that question has been posed since the beginning of time, and we are still discovering possible answers today.
Earlier this month, fragments of teeth and bone that are believed to be as much as 5.8 million years old were unearthed in Ethiopia. It has been discovered that these are the remains of a primitive creature that walked upright and existed at the time that scientists believe hominids diverged from chimpanzees.
According to Rick Potts, director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Human Origins Program, “As we get closer to that branching point {where hominids and chimpanzees diverged}, it’s harder and harder to determine whether what you have is a human, chimpanzee, the common ancestor, or an ape on neither lineage that subsequently died out.”
Still, it is interesting to note that scientists were able to determine that the creature lived in a wet, forested area -- a discovery that challenged the popular belief that man began walking upright in order to cross the grassy plains.
As scientists continue to make discoveries about the origins of the species, we want to know where you stand on the issue of evolution vs. creationism. Should evolution be taught in our nation’s public schools? How about creationism? Can someone believe in a higher power and still believe in the theory of evolution? Where do YOU believe we came from?
