With Less Than 24 Hours To Go, Presidential Race Is Too Close To Call

November 6, 2000

It has finally come down to this: 1 day left to determine who will become the next President of the United States of America. And it's going to be a nail-biter.

Since the Democratic and Republican conventions at the end of the summer, the 2000 presidential election has been essentially a two-horse race between Democratic nominee, Al Gore, and Republican nominee, George W. Bush. Recently, however, consumer advocate and Green Party candidate, Ralph Nader, has threatened to steal some support from the major candidates - Gore, in particular.

So how much impact, if any, do you think Ralph Nader will have tomorrow? Which of the two major candidates seems to have the most momentum heading into Tuesday’s election? What are your overall thoughts about the way all of this year's candidates have run their campaigns?

Here are some additional facts and figures to weigh and questions to answer before posting your opinions:

  • On September 19, iWon ran 4 > our first informal poll on the election. 39% of iWon users said they would vote for Gore. 37% said Bush. Third party candidates received 4%. 7% were undecided.
  • On October 24, we ran 4 > a similar poll and the results changed greatly. 42% of iWon users said they would vote for Bush. 37% said Gore. 5% said they’d vote for a third-party candidate and 6% were undecided.
  • On Tuesday, October 31, we ran 4 > our third poll. The results were similar – 42% Bush, 37% Gore, 5% said they’d vote for a third-party candidate and 5% were undecided. Finally, on Friday we ran our most recent poll. The results? 43% Bush, 37% Gore, 4% Nader (with another 1% opting for "other third party candidate") and 4% still undecided.
  • What do you think happened that made the results swing so greatly from the first to the second poll? Why have the results of other media organizations’ polls varied so greatly?
  • How do you feel about the political advertisements run by each campaign thus far? Do “attack ads” work?
  • In your opinion, which of the presidential candidates has run the smartest and most effective overall campaign thus far?
  • How much of a role have the Vice Presidential nominees played for you when deciding whom to vote for?
  • Regardless of whom you are planning on voting for, who do you think will wind up being the next President of the United States of America?

WHAT iWON USERS ARE CURRENTLY SAYING...
"Al Gore is the most experienced. Unfortunately, He is a well-practiced liar. All of his experience is in being crooked. If you want to vote for a crook with 24 years' experience, then Al Gore is your man. He cries about his sister dying of lung cancer from smoking and then continues to collect government subsidies for growing the poison anyway. Yes, he has lots of experience, and it's all bad!"

"Boy, is Bush a hypocrite, so ready to dish out criticism and condemnation about everyone else's past behaviors, but when someone mentions his own past mistakes he cries FOUL! Listen, if the Republicans can dish it out, they'd better be prepared to take it. I remember Mr. Bush himself bashing Clinton for his alleged college pot use. Now Mr. Bush wants us to just FORGET his past alcohol abuse (Cheney's, too). Well, that might work if it didn't stink so much of hypocrisy. Don't condemn others for the very sins and mistakes you are guilty of, Bush. And that goes for the rest of the Republicans, too."
