So close, yet so far away... Florida recount results may not be complete until next week

November 9, 2000

Is it over yet?

Not by a long shot. Officially, based on returns as of 1:48pm ET, the state of Florida has said that George W. Bush is ahead by 1,663 votes in Florida. However, this is based only on 45 counties out of 67. Media vote totals have the count MUCH closer - 229 votes separate the two candidates according to the Associated Press, with 66 out of 67 counties reporting. Confused? You're not alone.

State officials say the total (official) recount may not be complete until next Tuesday. Florida counties have until then to officially report on recount totals.

In addition, Democrats appear to be pushing a hand-count of ballots in four Florida counties - including Palm Beach County, where over 3,000 votes are being disputed due to a confusing ballot layout.

Oh, and then there are the overseas absentee ballots, accepted through November 17th. That's right - November 17th. Would you like a new president with your Thanksgiving turkey?

Confusing ballot in question

A "butterfly" ballot in Palm Beach County allegedly confused hundreds of voters, many of whom have said they accidentally voted for Reform candidate, Patrick Buchanan, instead of Al Gore. The county will hand-count ballots Saturday in three of its precincts.

What are your thoughts about Florida's recount? Charges of election irregularities?

WHAT iWON USERS ARE CURRENTLY SAYING...
"Why is Florida still using paper ballots??? Here in New Jersey, we vote in a booth in which you press a button that is CLEARLY next to the name of the person you're voting for, and the results are immediately accepted by the machine and recorded when you leave the booth. There is no way to vote twice or make other silly mistakes. Come on Florida!"

"Everyone knows if you mark two spots for one office it becomes nullified. People have mouths, if you are not sure of something, ASK!!! After the fact you cannot whine and complain that you did not understand something."

"I am appalled that we all do not vote in the exact manner in all states - this is the first I ever knew about it."
