U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Bush vs. Gore; nation awaits decision

November 10, 2000

UPDATE: Attorneys representing George W. Bush and Al Gore argued before the Supreme Court for 45 minutes each today. The 9 Justices did not render an immediate decision, and no indication was given for when a ruling would be handed down.

The hearing was held after the U.S. Supreme Court decided Saturday, by a 5-4 vote, to grant George W. Bush's request to halt recounts in Florida counties. The recounts had been ordered Friday by the Florida Supreme Court, and had been underway in some Florida counties for nearly 6 hours.

Gore lawyers argued that the decision by our nation's highest court makes it virtually impossible to finish recounts by December 12, the deadline Florida faces for naming their 25 presidential electors.

Friday, after an earlier setback in Florida Circuit courts, Al Gore won a victory in the Florida Supreme Court, when an earlier decision by Leon County Judge N. Sanders Sauls to deny further recounts in the state was reversed. By a vote of 4-3, the Court ordered a manual recount of all "undervotes" (those votes not registered by machine) across the entire state that show a "clear intent" on the voter's behalf. The Court has asked for the recount to commence immediately.

The Court's ruling also added 383 votes to Al Gore's total, narrowing the Bush lead to 154 votes.

In the background of these legal developments was the Florida legislature. The Republican-lead body was expected to finish up a session on Tuesday and decide whether to appoint their own slate of electors for Bush.

What do you think of these latest developments? How do you think the U.S. Supreme Court will rule?

WHAT iWON USERS ARE CURRENTLY SAYING...
"The lady who designed the ballot was a democrat. The democrats approved the ballot. The ballot was in the newspaper for several days prior to mailing it out. The ballot was in people's hands for several weeks prior to the election giving them plenty of time to ask questions or complain. The same ballot was used in Florida in 1992 and 1996, with no complaints. The same ballot was used in Cook County Illinois, which is where Gore's "defender" Daley is from and they also had no complaints. Will the Democrats ever stop blaming other people?"

"It is naive to presume that Bush and his supporters would not do the same thing (and more) if they were in Gore's position. After all, these are the same folks who investigated a land-deal for 5 years. Though this is all quite tedious, we must work it out to the satisfaction of the people. Since Gore won the popular vote, that's going to take awhile."
