Lee Truong looked more than a little surprised when Leeza Gibbons announced to the entire country that he was the first-ever iWon.com $10 Million prize winner. But Lee's first big shock had come a few days prior to the show when an iWon camera crew showed up at his front door to tell him he had been randomly selected as one of four iWon $10 Million hopefuls...
His deep sleep suddenly interrupted by a knock at the front door, Lee was obviously not expecting anyone important when he stepped outside his home to see who had awakened him.
Lee, you see, answered the door wearing only his boxer shorts and a t-shirt. So what did the 24-year-old San Jose State University student do when he realized an iWon camera crew was standing there, filming his every movement?
"I went and put on a hat."
That's right - of the four iWon members chosen to participate in the "iWon.com Annual $10 Million Giveaway" TV Show, Lee can say he is the only one who was told the good news in his underwear.
Lee's parents -- who are originally from Vietnam -- left their native country for Winston-Salem, North Carolina, shortly after the Vietnam War. Bob Truong, Lee's father, worked for a sponsor in exchange for a place for his family to stay until they could raise enough money to move out to the west coast. Lee was less than a year old when his family packed up for San Jose.
"They have their own restaurant now," Lee says of his parents. "Vietnamese food, mostly. And they have Karaoke. Karaoke with Vietnamese songs."
Lee mentioned before the show that if he won the $10 Million prize, "I would definitely set my parents up nicely. Definitely. Then I'd pay off their house or buy another house, and continue my education. I know my parents would want to send some (money) back to Vietnam because my grandparents and other relatives are still living there, and their houses aren't built too well."
Lee, an SJSU undergrad, is currently trying to get into the university's prestigious graphic design program. Based on work he has done in intermediate design classes, he must now show his portfolio to a school committee who will choose 25 out of 200 student applicants to enter the design program.
"It's what I really want to do. If I don't get in, I'll probably do it all over again for another chance to get into the program. I also have thought of working as an intern for an ad agency and learning more about graphic design there."
As Lee awaits the outcome of the school committee's decision, the outcome of another big event in his life is now complete -- he is iWon.com's first $10 Million Annual prize winner.
